We undertake jobs of all sizes, both on-site and at our inhouse facility. These case studies represent some of the larger projects we have been involed in.

Swansea Road (South Wales)
Client: Network Rail
Location: Swansea Road South Wales
Construction time: 4 weeks

The A48 is the main road through the village of Pontlliw and as such, access had to be maintained at all times for both vehicles and pedestrians throughout the 4 week construction programme. The interface with the general public therefore had to be carefully managed taking into consideration general health and safety measures, noise and air pollution levels and 24 hour site security.


  • Surface preparation by blast cleaning to SA2.5
  • Application of a three coat XM92 protective finish in complementary shades of blue
  • Install new GRP ballast plates

This work required:
  • Scaffolding & encapsulation
  • Rivet replacement
  • Steelwork repair
  • High pressure water jetting to abutments

Castle Street

As anyone who works on the railway infrastructure will know, health and safety management is at the forefront of everyone's thinking, this coupled with the close proximity of the public, the inclement February weather and the complexity of the job (particularly the underside of the bridge) meant that Supablast employees and management had to be on the top of their game to ensure that this project was completed safely, on time and on budget.


Bolton Bridge
Client: Network Rail
Location: Bolton
Construction time: 6 weeks

Network Rail - Bolton bridge refurbishment, timescale 6 weeks including grit blasting and painting to RT98 specification, and installation of new GRP walkway and steps.

  • Removal of existing timber stair treads
  • Installation of new line side fencing

North Wales Bridge
Client: Network Rail
Location: North Wales
Construction time: 4 weeks

Network Rail - North Wales bridge refurbishment, timescale 4 weeks including grit blasting and painting to RT98 specification, brickwork repairs and installation of new steel grillages.


  • Grit blast and paint to RT98 specification
  • Installation of new line site fencing
  • Brickwork repairs: repointing, pinning/stitching and grouting
  • Installation new steel grillages
  • Pointing of height restricted chevrons

Hartpury Equine Centre
Client: Hartpury Equine Centre
Location: Gloucester
Construction time: 3 weeks

Application of a 60 minute fire intumescent coating to a new steel framed building.


Crewe Bridge
Client: Network Rail
Location: Cefn-y-Bedd
Construction time: 8 weeks

Network Rail - Crewe bridge refurbishment, timescale 8 weeks including steelwork preparation and painting installation of new ballast plate and re-pointing abutments.


  • Steelwork preparation and painting
  • Installation of ballast plate, deck plates and packing plates
  • Pointing to masonry abutments

Chorley Bridge
Client: Network Rail
Location: Chorley
Construction time: 3 weeks

Chorley bridge refurbishment, timescale 3 weeks including grit blasting and painting to RT98 specification and application of anti graffiti paint.

  • High pressure water jetting to brickwork
  • Application of anti-graffiti paint to walls

Mancetter Bridge
Client: Network Rail
Location: Mancetter
Construction time: 6 weeks

Mancetter bridge refurbishment, timescale 6 weeks including grit blasting and painting to RT98 specification, steelwork repairs and installation of new web plates.


  • Grit blast and paint to RT98 specification
  • Steelwork repairs, installation of new web plates
  • New steel staircase, treads and parapet extensions
  • Installation of GRP anti-slip flooring
  • New concrete approach ramps and steps
  • Concrete repairs to stanchion bases

Drill Rig

Supablast completed work at our in-house facilities on a drill rig that is now operating in Australia. As the rig was to be assembled overseas the components were blast cleaned and painted individually to high tolerances in the controlled environment of our workshops.


  • Surface prep blast clean SA2.5 (ISO 5801-1 1988).
  • Stripe coat
  • Primary coat - Barrier. Dry film thickness 50-100 microns
  • Second coat Penguard FC. Dry film thickness 100-200 microns
